Getting Started

Because I started this project in Ohio, I'm going to include the information i know about the state of Ohio, but will also include all I'm learning about the state of Wisconsin.  I'll be documenting my story - front to back....the hurdles I am facing, the meetings I'm having, and the progress we're making.

I have applied for benefits here in Wisconsin, only to find that they think I make too much money.  Even though I've got two part time jobs, at $15/hr, there is a limit to what you can make.  They take into consideration what you pay for rent, utilities, child support or alimony and determine what amount of benefits you qualify for.  If you're staying with someone, and you're not paying rent or utilities to stay there, chances are you're not going to get benefits.  I am currently working on an appeal to show them that even though I may not be making alot of money on my two part time jobs, the money I have left barely covers things like gas (to and from my jobs) and food for myself and my dog.  My friend pays for almost all of the things we eat, but I can participate a little bit.  Mental health is important, and that needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to benefits and qualifying for them.  When I file my appeal, and hopefully will get time in front of a "benefits board" (I'm not sure how it works yet) - that i will be able to explain to them that it means alot to be able to take care of yourself - not to rely on others to take care of you - that self respect and dignity needs to be considered - not just a number of dollars you make at a job.  If you can't afford to put food on your table AFTER working, how will you manage?  Keep checking back for my progress.  In the meantime, click on the link above to begin your own application to see if you can apply for benefits.  Good luck!
